I think it's important to highlight that anyone starting out with investing should start with a diversified approach.
Don't have too few stocks (if you have just 1 or 2 stocks it is hard to manage risk) but also don't have too many.
Try to work out the intrinsic value of what you are buying and try to buy below intrinsic value. Avoid a scattergun approach. Also be careful with early-stage exploration drill-plays. If you are starting out with mining stocks, aim for stocks that already have resources or feasibility studies and have a clear strategy towards production.
In micro & small cap focus on trying to find stocks which have a sound/credible strategy and a management capable of delivering. Building a business takes time and you need to have a stomach for the volatility that occurs whilst the market gets bored.
Learn the attributes of a good dividend stock as that will give insights for investing at the small end of the market.
