Australia is one of the most racist, if not THE most racist country in the modern world today. As you mentioned people here forget that they stole the land from its rightful owners (aboriginals) via boats themselves, but now put themselves in a position to pass judgement on others.
I myself am from maltese descent and have faced it first hand to a large degree.
Not to say that there aren't a LOT of decent people, perhaps the majority of the population, but the minority few certainly make themselves felt and heard.
As a side note, racism probably runs deeper in more conservative circles of society, who tend to care more about money and material wealth in general. May be why you see a lot of it on HC.
