Two types of microspheres loaded with 90Y are commercially available, one made of resin (SIR-Spheres; Sirtex Medical, Sidney, N.S.W., Australia) and an alternative made of glass (TheraSpheres, MDS Nordion, Toronto, Ont, Canada); the differences include the amount of activity contained in each microsphere and the number of microspheres injected in a single treatment (< 5 million to 10-30 million for glass and resin microspheres, respectively); however, their efficacy, toxicity and clinical outcome are similar (Table 1).

My comment - it appears that if Sirtex are going to be penetrate the HCC market they are going to have to fight off a reasonably strong incumbent - difficult if the outcomes are similar?

Correct - there is little difference. At he end of the day they both do the same job.

It will come down to marketing and that does rely to some extent on being first mover into any centre. SRX has a very good footprint on centres in the US and EU. Future markets are up for grabs.

However as long as we get some good data, then having a competitor is not the end of the world

The major difference is;

The 'hotness' of any given bead. Any bead going off target will tend to cause more damage with the Thera as they are considerably hotter. Only time will tell if this is an issue or not.
