There appear to be numerous structural health monitoring conferences occurring around the globe. They are for aerospace, civil engineering, oil & gas, rail, vehicles etc. The list goes on. These conferences have been going on for years. When will they make a decision & adopt a proven technology instead of continually looking for the perfect solution?

There must be numerous people, making a living, being paid to go from conference to conference.

We were hoping for an early decision on CVM technology. I can now see why it is taking so long. There are numerous alternatives that are being put forward at these conferences including "Lamb Waves" which is being tested by Embraer as well as CVM.

Do not be surprised if a final decision takes longer than we all expected.

The following are just two of the conferences taking place this year.

The European Workshop on Structural Health Monitoring Series (EWSHM) is taking place this year from 10-13 July and will be held at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate in Manchester, UK.

EWSHM started in 2002 and since then has grown significantly over the years, becoming the strong counterpart to the International Workshop on SHM (IWSHM) held in Stanford, California, USA. The two recent conferences in Nantes (2014) and Bilbao (2016) were highly successful involving almost 500 delegates and 20 industrial companies and it is anticipated that the EWSHM2018 will prove to be just as popular.

    AND THEN THERE IS

SHM-NDT-2018: INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON STRUCTURAL HEALTH MONITORING AND NDT - SAARBRUECKEN, GERMANY

Industry 4.0 forms an opportunity for a paradigm shift from traditional Structural Health Monitoring and conventional Nondestructive testing to digital monitoring for process control and optimization. This requires new and intelligent, self-learning sensors. In this context, sensors are viewed primarily as complex systems, such as ultrasound or X-ray computed tomographs, thermography and eddy current sensors or electromagnetic sensors. These systems require an intelligent design and implementation, but the multidimensional and complex data streams generated by those sensors must also be intelligently analyzed using advanced image processing and modern machine learning techniques. The aim of the International Symposium on Structural Health Monitoring and Nondestructive Testing is to provide an overview of the latest breakthroughs in SHM and NDT and their interactions with various industrial fields. Internationally acknowledged experts and researchers in the field of SHM, NDT and data processing will communicate about the latest research and development activities. The symposium provides a forum for end-users, scientists, equipment suppliers and for an interested audience to discuss current scientific topics and to examine products as well as present and future possibilities for SHM and NDT. The symposium will be a 2-day conference on the 4th and 5th of October 2018 with oral presentations, poster session and industrial exhibition.
The Symposium SHM-NDT 2018 is organized by htw saar in cooperation with the German Society for NonDestructive Testing (DGZfP e.V.), the French Society for Nondestructive Testing (Cofrend), INSA- Lyon, FITT gGmbH, Fraunhofer IZFP, Fraunhofer EZRT and NDT.net.
