I suspect they will have surface works so that there is no large catchment area that drains into the PHS, such that if you get 1m of rain dam level may rise by say 2m not 20.
if they keep the surface water in the area out of the dams it wont get polluted by leaching from the mine workings.
As the dams did not fill up all by themselves it seems like they already have arranged it so that inflows do not exceed evaporative losses.
