Janti, I am not defending my own failure, I am quite comfortable because I have lived exactly as you describe: Within my means [and never divorced].
I would be MORE comfortable without the GFC which raises another issue. It disproportionately damaged those at or near retirement because it is they who have the most investments. And the continuing emergency low interest rate compounds the problem because of the low return on what is left.
Is a little tolerance of those you don't know anything about asking too much?
