One of the reasons Port Hedland is undergoing expansion at present is to free up stranded iron ore assets. There's a bottleneck at the port. Lithium could well end up in the same boat in the next 5 to 10 years.
To give some perspective, a rotabox / rotainer operation can transfer about 400tph per stream. Depending on the ship and berth layout, you can do 2 streams at once. It sounds like the 6 day loading time for the last ship may have been the result of single stream loading. So, I'm wondering if that's the norm.
A mobile shiploader, direct fed from a single truck stream can achieve around 750tph. (It can also be used at a general cargo berth). With two truck streams, that increases to 1,500tph. That results in lower demurrage costs and higher berth capacities. The trick is to load a ship as quickly as possible, without breaking its back. Most of these smaller ships have maximum loading rates of around 2,000 to 3,000 tph and can be loaded in about 24 hours. If Port Hedland is loading a spod ship in 6 days as the norm, that means there's an sizable opportunity there.
I think the last time I played around with these smaller mobile shiploaders they cost around $5M. Add on some paraphernalia for the unloading of half height containers, and there's possibly a nice efficiency dividend to be had, along with handy capacity increase.
