It is getting worse, imo. Society has become numb to other people's blood and gore thanks to the never ending trashy violence on our mostly American-made television shows and movies, along with the world of violent video games played by a generation of undisciplined and spoilt flotsam.

The local arm of the prohibitionist fun-police are rearing their ugly fists now with calls to make alcohol the next off the rank, following the smokers assassination.

Calls this morning to raise the price of alcohol to prohibitive levels. So as usual we will all be punished, including those who choose to imbibe on a moderate basis, in their own homes.

Of course there is never a mention to limit the hours venues can serve liquor, and let's face it this is usually where the punch drunks appear to cause most, if not all, of their havoc.

There was good reason why, in the past, we had appropriate limits in this regard. Not that I'd want to see a return to the "six o'clock swill", however when I was young the pubs closed by 10.30pm (if memory serves me correct), and quite frankly, we had all had more than enough by the time we left. The "Clubs" stayed open later, but were much dearer and you had to travel to get there.

Rarely did our generation ever witness any violence in pubs or even on the streets of the sleazy Cross.
