Interesting but not accurate. The Baotou REE++ region has been attracting capital for many years but it is accelerating as are the higher profit products being supported by them. It has been mentioned here at least a few times over the years, and not that long ago.
China is making more drones than anyone, and more everything from e-bikes to e-buses too, and from their own REE magnets. They have a Space Station and a Mars Rover for heavens sake. They might even have one on the Moon. They love STEM. They have overtaken all other countries in generating patents and technical graduates. Investing 25% of my portfolio in Chinese tech. The problem is exactly the opposite of the author’s claim. The problem is that China has been very rapidly moving up the value chain in all REE-enabled downstream applications. They openly claim they will consume all the magnets they produce. And they will; there is no doubt about it.
The questions ROW must answer are where will ROW industries get REE magnets since there is no substitute and what fraction of the overall REE-enabled trillion-dollar downstream market will ROW be able to hold on to without them.
Watch for ex-China magnets growth indications. Watch Bain Capital development of Hitachi Metals and their fully-dense NdPr IP. Watch Shin Etsu. We must see growth by big players. This is the biggest business and China is out in front.
