In light of China's threat to restrict its exports of rare earths to the US trade conflict , the US government has announced "unprecedented measures" to secure its supply of these metals. Trade Minister Wilbur Ross said Tuesday that these metals "are often overlooked, but without them, modern life would not be possible." A report from the Ministry of Commerce lists a total of 35 metals.Rare earths are 17 elements that have valuable properties for the production of smartphones, lamps, flat screens or cameras; They are also used in rockets or electric cars. So far, China accounts for more than 95 percent of global production.The US is dependent on rare earths for about 80 percent of imports from the People's Republic. China threatened last week that the US's trade war with the People's Republic risked losing supplies of materials "that are crucial to maintaining its technological strength."
