FF, your posts are almost invariably interesting and informative (and I thank you for them) but with this one you've really only muddied the waters, at least so far as my simple mind can comprehend it.

BUYING control: a) and b) seem to be about someone wanting (or needing) to increase his (apologies ladies) holding. So how is it supposed to work? Like this perhaps? He firstly dumps a lot of shares 'at market' in the attempt to drive the price down. But then he has to buy back a lot more than he sells so the idea must be to try to spook the market into thinking that the price is falling so all the nervous lemmings come out and sell, pushing the price even lower. The dumper then scoops up the cheap shares with his net position at the end of it all being a larger holding than he began with and, hopefully, at a lower price. Sounds very risky to me. Could end up going backwards very easily as the price rises when he tries to buy back.

    c) Clear as mud.

SELLING control: a) A stockbroker with a moral conscience? Sounds too unlikely to be an explanation of anything.

    b) How can anyone "force" anyone else to sell? (Unless they're both card-carrying members of the Melbourne underground.)

As to your last scenario, obviously any holder, large or small, might want to sell out for any number of reasons - that's what the market's there for - but what's that got to do with the kind of alleged manipulative behaviour that your post purports to be trying to explain?

OK, if I'm still missing the point (or points) completely, don't worry about it. Just call me Irish.

    HAGW,

    Edd
