27-11 - 14:52 Parliament today unanimously passed a controversial law that requires all mining operations to be licenced, regardless of their size. Citizens’ groups, led by rock collectors, had hoped to delay the third and final reading of the bill. They claim the legislative process up it is passage was “undemocratic”. The licencing requirement comes as national authorities are increasingly pinning their hopes on minerals and petroleum as the economic engines of an autonomous Greenland. Companies, such as Canada’s True North Gems, already have exclusive contracts to mine minerals such as rubies.
