You said the following. "Lowering the price of property will allow more people to buy if they wish."

What you are not considering here imo, is that there are a great deal of renters who for various reasons do not wish to buy.
EG. Transient people, like friends who are at university. Couples who are not ready to make such a commitment etc.
New arrivals, who need time to adjust etc before buying.

On the other end of the spectrum are poor or disabled people. Single Mothers, Fathers who are divorced. These people will never likely buy. You see renting a property does have many advantages, no strata fees, rates, land tax, repairs, higher interest rates and so on.

I do think that the government does have a responsibility to provide affordable, secure housing for those in need.
But are you aware, that it is the taxpayer who will be funding these build or renovations?

So it is the taxpayer in the. end who will be squealing however rental housing is provided, either publicly or privately.
Many are not looking at the whole picture, just becoming envious and angry with private landlords.

Many private investors who may be forced to sell up, as of course many are due to interest rate rises, but other proposed measures by the Green Party. Will likely land up on the state pension, which will cost an absolute fortune!
Far more than the tax benefits which they have received as a property investor.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but let us look at the whole big picture first.
Without doing so, homelessness will rocket.

This is just my own opinion.
