A generation ago Australia was pretty well self sufficient.
We produced more than enough food to feed itself (& exported what we couldn't eat).
We manufactured most of the real necessities of life (& even managed to export the innovations born out of that "nessesity is the mother of invention" environment)
The majority of families were middle class where the norm was one wage earner & there was time for family & life beyond work.
In short we were a nation of doers, workers. Needs were fullfilled if you were prepared to do even the minimum of work & most people had their wants firmly under control.
Today we import food (of far lesser quality)from the 4 corners of the earth (even from China which is struggling to feed itself for f sake)
We manufacture almost nothing.
The middle class exists largely in the minds of people that know no better, where dual incomes have increasingly become a necessity to survive & where family & leasure time has become a luxury "product".
We are now a nation of paper sufflers & scammers. & the scammers have taken over the highest positions (think the heads of the Macquarie Banks of our society) & have convinced the populous by example that greed is good. That extreme excess is the goal to aim for. That winning by any means & at any social cost is "right".
We have come a long way from the "lucky country" in a very short period of time.
