you will see that interest rates range in the USA range from 3-4% for long term fixed mortgages.

Bank of America is offering 30 year fixed loans at around 3.5%! I am sure if people shop around they can do better than this.

Imagine 30 year fixed rates like that in Australia! Property market would go into meltdown!
