You are correct in a way that you have to refernce POG to currencies, but that's part of the point.
Gold protects its holders from inflation.
Gold stocks offer more because of their leverage.
A 50% rise in the gold price may give a 100% rise in profits.
Then you get more leverage again through exploration and organic growth in production.
Higher gold prices therefore do make a big difference to the real wealth of shareholders of gold stocks.
