If you mean what happens to your shares literally?
Usually when a company wants to make a takeover they offer a price per share that they hope will make shareholders want to sell all their shares to the company attempting the buy out. Often this price is significantly higher than the current or recent trading price. It is then up to all shareholders if they wish to accept this offer. Often directors will offer guidance as to weather they believe the offer is fair or should be ignored.

often there are conditions on any take over offer such as 75% or more holders must accept for it to proceed.

If the take over is successful then untimely your shares will go to the buying company and you would receive the final offer price per share. Hopefully it ends up being a huge increase on shareprice before the offer and that is why many holders are excited about this possibility.

The downside of the takeover is that holders will never get to see the true value of the company later on as they no longer hold shares.
