I just watched a documentary on SBS called 'Last Chance to Save a Life' about antibiotic resistance superbugs. You should be able to view this on SBS on demand. It was fascinating to learn about Phage therapy, which was discovered in 1915. Phages are viruses found in human waste. Each phage targets different bacteria, so researchers have to identify the right phage to combat the specific bacteria causing the infection.
The documentary highlighted three cases of superbug infections: a leg infection, a lung infection, and a chest infection. Unfortunately, the patient with the leg infection couldn't undergo phage therapy because they couldn't pinpoint the infecting bacteria. In this case, I would suggest there's still hope with Recce therapy.
As emphasized by the researcher in the show, antibiotic-resistant bacteria are a present concern, not just a future threat. Recce could potentially represent humanity's last line of defense.
