I believe that anti-viral applications have definitely been a part of RCE's plans in the long term, just that they concentrated on anti-bacterial to start with (presumably because they thought it would be the most productive place to start while keeping costs down). For example see this article from 2016.
One thing that is new is that they have developed a new formulation of their drug (RECCE 529) designed to work better against viruses, but RECCE 327 also has anti-viral abilities as shown in yesterday's results.
