However I think you are referring to company listed options. These are provided by companies usually as a part of capital raisngs as a sweetener. They give the buyer the right to exercise these options by paying the exercise price thus turning the option into a full price share. This can be done at any time prior to expiry. Options not exercised by expiry become worthless regardless of the price paid for them. They can provide great leverage but are high risk and most company options expire worthless (most not all though). A problem also with options can be the lack of liquidity where you can't get out of your positionwithout taking a major hit. Option trading really is for the more experienced trader/investor.
