Invariably the first and worst investments for most people is one and the same. It involves losing a lot of money on some speculative POS on a tip from a friend/broker/cab driver etc, at the height of a speculative bubble (gold exploration, biotech boom, tech boom. U308, biofuels etc).
That is the greatest risk for novices. A bull market makes people confuse luck with skill. All sorts of scamster fan this misconception. $7,999 for chart programs, seminars, untold riches, 5 minutes a day, from the comfort of your own home, be your own boss, long walks on the beach etc.
Then the market tanks. Game over.
