Labor MP calls on Govt to review uranium mining ban:

The Queensland Labor Member for Hervey Bay has called on the State Government to rethink its ban on uranium mining.

The Energy Minister's backbench committee chairman, Andrew McNamara, has joined fellow Labor MP Tony McGrady in requesting a review of the policy.

Mr McNamara says Queensland has an obligation to be part of a global energy solution, with an estimated $3 to $4 billion in uranium deposits.

"We will never be a major player, most of Australia's uranium is in the Northern Territory and South Australia," he said.

"But it's important that we, as a responsible part of the world's energy supply industry, consider the needs of energy users."

Mr McNamara says while uranium exports could generate large profits and many jobs for the state, he is not suggesting Australia should develop its nuclear power.
