THE sale of SingTel Optus's cable assets into the national broadband network could be the first step towards relisting the company on the stock exchange as its Singaporean parent seeks to reduce its exposure to Australia.

Comment:
SingTel/Optus considering trade its 26,000km Hybrid Fibre Coax and 21km of fibre in return for equity stake in the NBN, and seeking limits put on the power of Telstra, with Telstra also be split into retail and network operations.
Telstra may agree to split into retail and network operations, with some of its existing network operations becoming its share in the NBN, likely want to keep some of them.
Reality is Australia has two market areas, where competition is viable and where it is not.
Competition is viable in some metropolitan areas.
Competition is also viable connecting each of the viable metropolitan areas in each states/territories to each other.
Some other urban areas may also be viable for competition, with more likely in the future; Initially this relates more to their locations along the connections between the viable metropolitan areas than individual viability; However their individual viability grows.
For most of Australia infrastructure competition NOT viable.
That this easy to recognize with transport highway comparisons clear to most except - for far to long those in government, where thankfully now accepted.
SingTel's interest may be to recover capital through sale/transfer of this infrastructure. or separate re-listing of Optus.
My interest and personal investment in SingTel is partly for Optus and its share of Australian market, greater interest is how across Asia it provides a good telecommunications investment with its shareholding/invesments and partnership deals.
SingTel's spread across Asia is what IMHO Telstra recognizes and is working to develop for itself, as longer term this spread is the growth area for both, and SingTel is well ahead.
So watching with interest, IF to spin of Optus, prefer to keep my investment in the wider coverage of SingTel.
