Did you know that there are now more electric rickshaws in India than electric cars in China? And their numbers are increasing by 11,000 every month - and that's without any government incentives. The population is finally waking up to the prospect of clean air and cheap public transport, as is the government. Modi is so impressed that he has ordered his Ministry of Finance to allocate $600 million to increase the number of charging stations and subsidize electric buses. Added to that he has ordered his administration to push for EVs in all public transport from two wheel and three wheelers, taxis and the aforementioned bus fleet.

As for the rickshaw drivers, they love them - quiet, much cheaper to run and cheaper to maintain - not to mention the appeal of fume free transport to the masses and tourists alike. With overwhelming support from drivers, passengers and the government the EV momentum on the Sub-Continent is set to explode with a market that equals China.

I wonder if Consuela will settle for an electric rickshaw? "Madam," I suggested, "you can imagine you are an exotic Indian princess touring your realm. I'll even throw a white umbrella and some rickshaw walla's to clear the road of peasants."
