I'm always up for hearing about how lithium batteries are being used in all manner of old and new ways (thanks @Barg and others). Now I've just read about a new jaw-dropping application -- rocket power. Today a small NZ-US company successfully launched several micro satellites (from New Zealand no less) using a novel rocket engine - largely 3D printed - where a lithium polymer battery powers a pair of powerful brushless electric motors which drive pumps pushing liquid oxygen and kerosene into the engine combustion chamber.
