I moved to Australia from the UK. I can tell you that, roughly speaking, I found the AU$ to spend about the same as the UK pound. at about 2.5:1, this means that life in Australia is far more pleasant for me than it would be in the UK. I simply could not afford the house and style of my life in Perth if translated to the UK.
Agree that Australian house prices are high, but are at a similar absurd level in relation to earnings etc as UK and US I think. Perth has been behind in this matter (makinglife more gracious) but is having a strong run on resources boom and property shortage. In Perth I bought a house with land, small pol and reasonable distance from CBD. The same money would have got me a much smaller appartment and a horror comute in Sydney I think.
All the western countries seem to be printing money as fast as the mills can produce paper for the presses. As a friend says about his children "This has tears written all over it".
