China just raised the tariff (tax) on RE's headed to the US. This is significant in that it shows China is interested in playing the RE card. While this makes REs more expensive to the US it is not the ultimate card which would be total US export shutdown. Xi may want to keep that card in his hand for a while...
Anyway, a couple of quotes from two interesting articles that show the RE issue is stirring...
China raised tariffs to 25 percent from 10 percent on American imports of rare earths, an esoteric group of materials used in everything from electric cars to high-tech military equipment.
China ships out about 80 percent of the rare-earth materials imported by the U.S., ...China has sent a message to the Trump administration about its growing prominence in this key supply chain.
