    re: banjar the source of timorese anger yak, you appear to be trying to draw a link between Suharto surrounding himself with competent people and corruption.
    The fact is that personal relationships did mean that people who were close to Suharto were given opportunities. However, and this is important, the opportunity was only given once. If they failed, they generally weren't given a second chance. On the other hand if the venture was a success, then further opportunities came their way, but it was by virtue of their demonstrated competence, rather than personal relationships. Being close to Suharto gave people a chance to get their foot in the door only. Once in, you had to earn the right to stay their. Suharto could not afford to surround himself with people who were not the most competent, and did not tolerate those that weren't.
