Zinc enjoyed a significant price hike as supply growth dwindled thanks to the closure of a the Century zinc mine in Queensland in late 2015 and the Lisheen mine in Ireland.
While the price has soared, Australian listed zinc plays have responded only modestly.
Red River Resources raised $30 million late last year and enjoyed a 127 per cent share price leap to trade at 21¢ in 2016, while fellow junior explorer Metalicity which is looking to jump start the undeveloped Admiral Bay zinc deposit in northern Western Australia, has traded largely sideways throughout 2016, despite reports that it's sitting on the fourth-largest undeveloped zinc deposit in the world.
Investors have largely shunned uranium for the last six years following Japan's Fukushima nuclear disaster in March 2011. During 2016 the price slid a further 42 per cent, hitting a 13-year low.
However there are some signs that the uranium price may have found a bottom since the election of Donald Trump to the White House.
Uranium contract prices have picked up in anticipation of renewed interest in nuclear power. The first US nuclear power plant in more than two decades recently started commercial operation and, according to a Bloomberg report, there are several nuclear projects in the pipeline.
Shares in Australia's largest uranium producer Paladin Energy have enjoyed modest buying support since it emerged that the company is looking to refinance with major bondholders and sell a stake in its flagship Langer Heinrich mine.
The stock recovered 45 per cent in December to trade around 8¢.
