Worker burnt in smelter blast
March 08, 2007 12:11pm
A WORKER suffered burns to up to 60 per cent of his body in an explosion at the Zinifex lead smelting plant at Port Pirie, north of Adelaide, early today.
The man was taken to the burns unit at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, the South Australian Ambulance Service said.
His condition was considered serious but his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
A Zinifex spokesman said the explosion was sparked about 6am (CDT) and appeared to have occurred when molten material was being discharged from a furnace into the smelter.
He said an internal investigation into the incident had begun.
No one else was hurt.
