Attraction of 3G wireless broadband triples sales
    Paul Smith (AFR)
Broadband modem and router maker NetComm expects further growth this year from the continuing expansion of global wireless broadband take-up after its results showed strong performance unhindered by the global financial crisis.
Revenue for the financial year ended June 30 was up 305 per cent on the previous year to $78.5 million, net profit after tax rose 175 per cent to $5.9 million and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation leapt from $919,000 last year to $6.2 million.

David Stewart said its strategy to reduce its exposure to commoditising ADSL broadband devices and position itself as a world-leading supplier of 3G (third generation) wireless broadband technologies helped the result. He said the market
for fixed-line broadband in Australia had reached maturity and the company would focus elsewhere for growth.
"While there is certainly churn going on and some upgrades, it would be fair to say that the volume of new fixed wire business has dramatically reduced over the last year or so," Mr Stewart said.
"The rapid take-up of devices like smartphones has contributed to our strong performance alongside the fact that 3G broadband devices allow people that have not previously been able to access fixed wire broadband to pick something up and run with it."
Mr Stewart said that a deal signed with Telstra last May had less influence in the second half as the company made inroads into a broader segment of customers, particularly overseas.
Looking ahead, he said NetComm had reason to be optimistic about export growth in the 3G product market and the company was already involved in a number of overseas projects that would be delivered in the year ahead.
The company said it would be paying a dividend, but didn't announce the details. Mr Stewart said the amount and timing would be announced within 14 days.
