Mate, I love and understand your wife's thinking, I would never-ever leave my dog at a kennel.
It would/could traumatize him/them for the rest of their lives.

It has happened to a friend's dog, the poor thing never got over it, displaying extremely anxious behaviour ever since.

Whenever I am going on holydays I get a house/dog sitter to look after my baby, it is still a traumatizing experience for him, but a lot less so.

I know and understand it's not always possible to do that, but I personally would choose to not to go, than exposing him to such heartbreak, anxiety.

They really can't understand and comprehend it all.

Can you imagine, what they really must be feeling /thinking, when that happens to them?
