Copper gains as other metals see price declines

Prices for precious metals and most base metals were lower Friday, but copper prices were up on hopes that China will stop raising interest rates after manufacturing growth there slowed in June.
September contracts for copper added 2 cents to $4.30 per pound and were up 4.9 percent on the week after the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing?s purchasing managers? index was reported at 50.9 in June, down from 52 in May as factory activity grew at its slowest rate in nearly two and a half years and neared contraction, which is signalled by a PMI of 50 or less.
On the other hand, US manufacturing activity was up in June, with the Institute for Supply Management reporting that its factory index was up to 55.3 in June, from 53.5 in May against an expected decline, showing that factory activity expanded during the month.]
Three-month contracts for copper were up $23 to $974.53 per tonne on the London Metal Exchange, but aluminium, tin, zinc, nickel and lead all saw declines.
