MANILA - The board of Trans-Asia Oil and Energy Development Corp has cleared a plan to build a second generating unit for a coal-fired power project in Batangas.
In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, Trans-Asia said its board of directors approved a P1.5 billion investment in South Luzon Thermal Energy Corp (SLTEC).
The money will be used to finance the construction of the second generating unit of SLTEC's 135-megewatt coal power project in Calaca, Batangas. The additional capacity, however, is "subject to the approval [by] SLTEC."
SLTEC is a joint venture between Trans-Asia and AC Energy Holdings Inc. Trans-Asia belongs to the Phinma Group, while AC Energy is part of the Ayala Group.
The second generating unit is estimated to cost P12 billion and is scheduled for completion by the third quarter of 2014.
Once completed, the project will help augment Luzon's power supply, as the grid is seen to require an additional 1,000 megawatts in 2014, based on data from the Department of Energy.
Luzon's available generating capacity is placed at over 9,000 megawatts, while peak demand is above 7,300 megawatts.
Regulators, however, require the region to maintain at least 1,500 megawatts of reserves for back up supply and grid security.
