    DJS COH Release today

COCHLEAR, the world's biggest maker of bionic ears, said today the cost of a recent recall of its Nucleus 5 hearing implant will range between $130 million and $150m.

Cochlear last month recalled its latest range of devices after customers experienced an unexplained increase in failures, sending its shares plummeting.

The company said it will book a provision in its first-half results, for the six months to December 30, that will comprise costs related to the recall and stock write-offs.

A precise number will be finalised shortly but based on current information it will range between $130m to $150m, Cochlear said.

"The provision includes a number of non-cash items and we expect the after tax cash cost impact of this provision to be in the range of $20m to $30m," it said.

Despite the hit, Cochlear said anticipated strong cash flows will help it pay a first-half dividend of $1.20 a share, up from $1.05 a share a year earlier. For the first half of the last financial year Cochlear booked a net profit of $87.2m.
