PETER Beattie's apparent uranium U-turn in Queensland can be expected to set off a land rush there for new prospects now that mining the stuff becomes possible. The first off the mark appears to be Bowen Energy, which has applied for another 5000sqkm of tenements around Croydon and Georgetown. Bowen already holds the Glen Isla uranium target near the old Mary Kathleen mine and has a drilling rig booked to start work by May.
Another busy pegger around the old gold mining town of Croydon is Gold Aura, whose shares soared in January on the back of high-grade zinc and silver drill results. Now the company has lodged tenement applications for another 1800sqkm, so there's not much there left to be pegged. Gold Aura is reporting good gold grades, along with tin, tungsten, copper and lead.
