Redbank clean-up desperately needed

LEGACY mining issues are cropping up around Australia, but the Redbank copper mine in the Northern Territory’s McArthur Basin region may be one of the worst, according to an environmental expert.
Dr Gavin Mudd, a senior lecturer in environmental engineering at Monash University in Melbourne who has visited 60-100 mine sites throughout his career, ranks Redbank as one of the worst of any he has seen.
“There is severe pollution, the likes of which you rarely ever see,” he told MiningNewsPremium.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a mine site as polluting as Redbank – it’s a pretty small and modest site, it’s not big at all, so it’s quite stark.”
Mudd reported that copper sulphide drainage from Redbank was wiping out all biodiversity in Hanrahan’s Creek, even though the project had not been mined in close to 20 years.
“There’s still some life left but only life that will sort of grown in battery acid-type conditions,” he said.
