FYI these days NewsPoll is contracted out by NewsCorp Australia to the polling company YouGov.
NewsPoll is now just a brand.
In the olden days News Limited directly employed a whole section of workers to ring households on land lines.

For YouGov's NewsPoll it's now all online by email invitation.

Data is collected online from selected people who are eligible to vote using YouGov's recruited research panel.
So to take part in the surveys people have to first join the panel of respondents who have agreed to participate in online research activities.
YouGov invites a selection of people from the panel to take part in NewsPoll.
Responses are then rim weighted to reflect the demographics of the Australian population compared to the those sampled.
Weighting variables are Age x gender x location,
    Age x education,
    AEC region x household income

People join the panel at the link.
Answering surveys accumulates points that can be traded for cash or other rewards.
