white people came and felled a lot of trees. this resulted in worse flooding as run-off wasn't absorbed by tree roots/soils weren't held together by roots and streams/rivers became silted up causing worsening floods.
in the 60's to 80s the cause of severe flooding was recognised and remediation works begun. as a consequence flooding eased in extent and severity.
now with advanced flood mitigation works in place flooding has again become extreme due to increasingly extreme weather events.
