Regarding renewables they may get there eventually but it is unlikely in any of our lifetimes. There is an excellent article by Bjorn Lomborg in The Australian (Saturday 14th November). Wind and Solar provides 0.4% of the worlds energy according to the International Energy Agency , and by 2040 will provide just 2.2%. Currently the only cost-effective alternative to coal is gas (and i presume nuclear energy although he does not include that)
