Former Blue Sky venture capitalist Elaine Stead has been awarded $280,000 in general and aggravated damages in her defamation lawsuit against the The Australian Financial Review and its Rear Window columnist Joe Aston.
Federal Court Justice Michael Lee found Mr Aston honestly held his opinions about Ms Stead, but there was insufficient details in the opinion columns themselves to meet the requirements of defamation law.
Justice Lee said the amount awarded reflected the damage to Ms Stead’s reputation and feelings.
