We reached peak oil (petroleum) some years back, now we are slipping down the steep shoulder of the curve. It was inevitable that conflicts were going to erupt and that America would think it could steal remaining petroleum supplies from somewhere. WW 1 was mostly about coal. WW II was primarily about oil. Pretty much all of America's later wars were about petroleum, the Vietnam War certainly was. The trouble with fossil fuels is they are just that: FOSSILS. Once it is used up its gone. It does not replenish on human time scales.
Pity so much is wasted, especially on wars trying to acquire more!
