The energy in a cubic metre of water raised to a height of 200 metres is about half a kilowatt hour. this is a rough figure for quick comparison. A redflow has 10 kw.hr storage. So even with a 200 m head available for the hydro batteries offer far superior energy density. Water has a lot of other advantages of course but pumped hydro (because of losses decreases. performance even more) in a countries where suitable locations are few and far between without causing other problems is a bad idea in my opinion.

Interesting I double checked that using a rough 1 kg over 1 meter for 1 joule and came out with very similar result as you .
Batteries are obviously better for instant power and being available close to the consumer , pumped hydro better for large energy bulk storage IMHO .
