Some years ago when the idea was floated in WA of eliminating poles and wires for farmers X distance apart and replacing their power with RAPS I grabbed the figures they used and realised the average distances here might be 100-150 metres closer, but there are way more trees and hills to consider too, especially the trees, and then there is the pasture around the poles that burns most of the poles down when there are no trees, which is what happens in the 10m cleared strip along the lines , unless of course the poles are in a paddock anyway. That is I suspect our line maintenance costs are actually quite a high component of the supply charge.
As costs continue to come down it is going to be the most cost effective way to supply power to most farming regions.
