Flow batteries such (iron, Vn etc) don’t require conditioning cycles like this (Redflow isn’t a true flow battery - it’s a hybrid). ZnBr chemistry can be completely discharged with reversible reactions therefore such conditioning cycle are possible. This is not the case for other battery chemistries, eg. a PbA and various Li-ion chemistries will be destroyed by non-reversible reactions if attempt to recondition via 100% discharge. The cycle is also more critical for zinc-hybrid as dendrites are formed quickly … but also a benefit as the conditioning cycle completely removes them and gives the ZBM3 its long life.

Gelion also performs a “conditioning” cycle and enjoys a similar long life, however the time between these cycles is longer (about once per month) and Gelion cells are smaller (1/8th of a ZBM3) so even at a domestic size the cycle would be managed by the BMS and not be noticed by the consumer.

Perhaps RFX can extend the time required between maintenance cycles, but I can’t see them ever eliminating them.
