Sustainability has established itself as a trend in the beauty industry as consumers and brands are becoming more concerned about global warming, pollution, and our future as a whole. Around 120 billion units of beauty packaging goes to waste every year, and the beauty industry is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. It is time for new leaders to take charge, and RÉDUIT is at the forefront of being part of the solution, rather than part of the problem.
RÉDUIT is committed to doing everything in its power to foster sustainability in the beauty industry. Beauty giants such as Shiseido, L’Oréal, and Estée Lauder have each reported between 6-10% reduction of carbon dioxide emissions annually, and RÉDUIT is aiming to match – or better – their achievements. These industry giants reduce about 400 tons of carbon dioxide output annually per facility.  RÉDUIT is projected to reduce the equivalent, as much as 400 kilo-tons of CO2 only in its first year!  This indicates that it is likely to outperform the most successful cosmetic companies and large-scale facilities very soon: within a few years, RÉDUIT will have set a new standard for carbon footprint and sustainability efforts in the beauty industry.
But the buck doesn’t stop there; as a consumer, you have the power to hold brands accountable and push them to do better. While RÉDUIT is already making an effort to be more sustainable, you can also help us create a greener beauty industry.

    What can you do?
73% of consumers say they’ll change their buying habits to be more eco-friendly, and 41% are willing to pay more for sustainable products. Just as a long journey begins with the first step, your change can start small. Here are a few ways you can introduce sustainability into your beauty routine and help reduce your carbon footprint.
    Recycle
Everyone knows the old mantra, ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’, but do you put it to good use? Always recycle your old product containers if you can, including jars, bottles, and tins. Check with your local recycling facility to see whether you are recycling correctly, since sometimes products may not be recyclable even if they are made of recyclable materials. We know it’s tough to decipher all those strange symbols on packaging, but make the effort and you just might save some packaging from ending up in a landfill.
Remember to clean out your product containers before you recycle them, if this is possible. A simple rinse will ensure that your recycling facility isn’t forced to divert the waste to a landfill. This is especially important when it comes to single-stream recycling, where unrinsed containers can contaminate other recyclables, such as paper, and deem them un-recyclable. Just like checking which materials can be recycled, it is an important step in proper recycling.
Many beauty brands offer their own recycling services so that none of your beauty packaging goes to waste. Take advantage of RÉDUIT’s Return and Renew Program to recycle your used Hairpods™ and do some good for the environment. All of our Hairpods™, including the brand-new Vapored Strength LED, are fully recyclable through this program. The only thing you have to do is send them to our nearest facility — we’ll do the rest for you. To thank you for participating in our sustainability efforts, we’ll give you a promo code that you can use to get a free Hairpod™.

    Reduce
Sustainability isn’t just about recycling. Remember, this is the last step in the waste hierarchy. Always try to reduce your output of waste and reuse empty beauty containers before trying to recycle.
One way you can reduce waste is by buying products with no or minimal packaging. RÉDUIT’s advanced delivery systems have been specially designed to produce 20x less waste than traditional products. Our Hairpods™ formulations are free of unnecessary fillers and stabilizers that form the bulk of traditional products and often go to waste. Each pod is only 5mL in volume, but due to its super-concentrated formula, it is equivalent to 100-200 ml of traditional products, therefore resulting in less plastic waste and a smaller carbon footprint.
Conserving water is also one way you can reduce your beauty routine’s impact on the environment. Don’t leave the tap running if you’re not using it, and the same applies for your shower. After wetting your hair, turn off the water to lather on shampoo and conditioner. You can also do some good for the environment by taking shorter showers. An 8-minute-long shower wastes a whopping 60L (15.9 gallons) of water on average, and that’s not that long at all.

    Reuse
Instead of recycling your empties, try resuing them and upcycling. Not only can you reuse old containers and jars as-is to store new products, but you can transform that waste using some DIY skills to give it a second life with a new function. For example, empty jars make great planters or jewelry storage, while shampoo bottles can be repurposed into miniature vases and reed diffusers.
Do you use reusable bags when you go grocery shopping? Don’t forget to bring those bags when you shop for cosmetics, too. Next time you go to stock up on your shampoo or foundation, take a reusable bag with you and save on plastic and disposable bags that can pollute the environment.
