Been very well documented here & elsewhere the economics of PMM DD Wind Gen are largely dependent on the cost efficiencies of 8/10MW machines offshore and the development of NdFeb is playing a vital role in that ongoing program.

"With the full commissioning of the prototype, Siemens will enter the final development phase for the new turbine that allows for up to 10% higher annual energy production (AEP) under offshore wind conditions than the 7-MW model. The upgrade to eight megawatts enables a rated power increase of more than 14% from 7.0 to 8.0 MW. Similar to the previous upgrade from 6.0 MW to 7.0 MW, the 8-MW turbine will benefit from the established supply chain and proven offshore direct drive technology components. Since the higher rating will be achieved with only a few component upgrades including a new cooling concept and a new control system, customers will again benefit from key value drivers including fast time-to-market and low risk."

Note, this is essentially the same platform that emerged very briefly as 6MW but within months was upgraded to 7MW and a key part of that upgrade was reducing DyO from 0.7% of NdFeB magnets to 0.6%, effectively reducing costs and increasing power, partially managed by redesigned cooling system.

Now Siemens have taken it a step further with another upgrade to 8MW with "a few component upgrades including a new cooling concept" > "The final type certificate is expected for 2018."

Note also, "equipped with the proven 154-meter rotor" which speaks directly to the vibration problems being encountered with larger rotors on these massive machines.

Effectively PMM DD Wind Gen is still a work in progress, which accounts the slow growth in recent years, no one has "given up" on it, but C&P from social media is certainly not a meaningful analysis of demand profile.

DD Wind Gen is still striving for its economic pitch point and development NdFeB cost efficiencies in situ is playing a significant role. Obviously a competitive, yet complimentary, enviro vs solar and broad proof of concept @ mkt still pending.

NdFeb > Wind Gen just one of promising demand segments, particularly given mass, but picking favourites often ends badly. Key to most of these is ongoing development of NdFeB cost efficiencies, keeping well ahead of competing alternatives, and that includes ongoing maturity of the primary RE industry, all things flow from that.

There is no upper limit for turbine rating; the bigger the better (capacity, efficiency, etc). I expect someone to announce 15MW or higher under development in the next couple years. The GE Haliade X is 12MW and could be up and running sometime in 2020, IIRC. I've presented the group with a lot more info than what you are looking at on social media, btw. It's true much is anecdotal, but so are boots are the ground.

Fully expect floating offshore to be dominated by NdFeB PMDDs based on my reading.

I don't expect NdFeB PMMs to be quite as dominant in EVs.
