Hansel - very funny - if you used one of our magnets on your fridge door, you'd have a hard time taking it off again.

There is some chance of rare earth fridges in the near future - some revolutionary technique I read about a couple of years ago that uses no compressor, but somehow cools using powerful magnetic fields. If I recall correctly, the rare earth involved was prasiodymium - sorry, don't have time to check up on it now but it was supposed to be much much more efficient than current techniques. If they find a way of making it work commercially then the demand for that rare earth will be astronimical - the fridge is the most power hungry appliance in most houses, and if you replaced even a small percentage of the fridges in the world, I reckon it would add up to a lot of energy to be saved and a huge demand for the rare earths involved. I hope they crack it.
