The murderer killed by police last night in Melbourne arrived in Australia
as a refugee,
faced trial on Islamic terrorism charges and
was on parole following a series of violent crimes.
Adding further volatility, the fellow was an ice enthusiast. Somalian
Yacqub Khayre had it all going on:
The gunman at the centre of a deadly Melbourne hostage drama was known to counter-terrorism investigators and was on parole.
He was last night shot dead by police and another man found murdered after two horrific hours which plunged Brighton into lock-down.
Three police from the special operations group were injured in a gunfight which ended with the suspect’s death at a Bay St apartment complex.

Khayre was charged and later acquitted over a terror plot to launch a suicide attack against Sydney’s Holsworthy army barracks in 2009. Khayre later carried out a violent and terrifying home invasion which resulted in him being jailed for at least three years.
The court heard he carried out “gratuitous violence’’ on a young woman before punching and headbutting her father.
He was recently paroled, sources have told the Herald Sun, and was rated as a low-risk person of interest by anti-terror police.
The state government is treating the Brighton incident as a terrorism episode. A male caller to the Channel 7 newsroom in Melbourne reportedly said during the siege: “This is for IS (Islamic State) and this is for al-Qaeda.”
Somali refugee Khayre’s fondness for ice had earlier led to many serious crimes:
There was an attempted armed robbery, burglaries, thefts, unlawful assault and going equipped to steal.
Khayre had stabbed a young train passenger while trying to rob him of his phone.
That crime was committed while Khayre was on bail over other matters.
Later came two firearms offences, including one of being a prohibited person in possession of a gun.
Now he’s a dead person in possession of police ammunition. Good.
