I don’t quite understand what we disagree on, Learner (if on anything). I get the Western countries / Africa history and understand that there are many reasons for resentment against the West in Africa. I also understand that there is a lot of cheerleading going on to just throw the West out of Africa and embrace the saviours, namely the Chinese and the Russians. But what I also understand is that as an emerging power trying to gain influence, you will apply appropriate tactics, so the Chinese come carrying gifts or at least conduct trade in a fairer way than the West does. But if they become the prevailing power or even a hegemon in the region, this is bound to change sooner or later. People, corporations, nations etc. with too much power tend to start abusing the power, and so will China. To believe that the Chinese (or the Russians) are in their nature any different than their Western competitors, have superior moral / ethical principles etc., is, in my opinion, a delusion (I come from ex-communist block of countries). Ensuring that there is competition between different (super)powers is the way to go, otherwise, you will just end up in the same place where you are today.
